Palm Sunday begins holy week with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He was met with a vibrant celebration of joyful praise to God: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” However, those shouts of worship would turn to shouts of wrath within a few days: “Crucify him!” Jesus had not come to be crowned in royal pomp, but with a crown of thorns. Through his suffering, he not only rescued us from our sin, but for worship. We are made to worship, but sin has disabled us from doing what is most basic to our humanity. Jesus’ work as our servant-king has restored our capacity to love him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
